When the IRS has a question or has made an adjustment to your tax return, they will send you a letter or notice in the mail. It is very important not to ignore these notices. If you receive a notice make sure and read it carefully. If you don’t understand it or if it doesn’t make sense bring it by the office.
These notices generally fall into one of the following categories:
- The IRS has a question about something on your return and might need more information
- The IRS has changed something on your return
- You have a balance due to the IRS that needs payment
Make sure you respond if they are requesting more information or payment. Be careful if it claims you owe money you were not expecting to owe. There are some scams going around. If you have any questions we are here to help.
